When James Madison College, MSU’s elite residential college focusing on public affairs and international relations, produced a video about their student ambassador program, they called on Cheeney Media for our ability to shoot people in their own environments in a way that is comforting, cozy, and warm. Our professional techniques, honed over the decades, put nervous interviewees at ease and get the very best footage possible.
Cheeney Media provided speaker magnification for the big screens throughout this sold out, yearly event in the beautiful Breslin Center concourse. The program featured MSU President Kevin M. Guskiewicz with the Spartan marching band, cheer team, and dance team among others.
When big organizations want their live streamed program to run without a hitch, they call Cheeney Media. We’re widely known for our experience and attention to detail.
We at Cheeney Media are proud to have been a big part of the team gathering visuals for the launch of The MSU College of Nursing’s new web site.
Cheeney Media was once again hired to provide still photography services for Michigan State. Every year, high school students with aspirations to attend the Honors College at MSU are invited to attend Green and White Days at MSU. At Green and White Days, these highly exceptional students meet other highly exceptional students and learn that it’s a little harder to stand out when you’re in a group made up of only exceptional students. They also make lifelong friends and learn about the perks of belonging to the Honors College, like being able to sign up for hard-to-get-into classes LONG before other students can, or even the ability to turn a regular course into an Honors course.
For the past 3 years, Cheeney Media has run the yearly graduation event for the Great Lakes Learning Academy. This event gives students attending the online high school the opportunity to celebrate commencement with their families and friends.
Some shoots simply require a drone. Fortunately, at Cheeney we have a full-time, licensed, experienced drone pilot on our staff who knows how to get exactly the shot needed.
From Woldumar Nature Center:
“Many native plants from Michigan prairies are evolved for surviving fires and sometimes even require it for germination. Our native grasses have roots that dig deep underground so after the surface is burned away they can shoot right back up using the energy reserves in the roots. Other plants are evolved to quickly move into areas specifically like this, where the ground is bare as can be.”
This live event featured Tom Izzo and MSU/NBA star Steve Smith (as well as Sparty) at the podium for a celebration of donors to MSU’s basketball program. The ceremony also honored Smith himself, who famously donated a record $2.5 million toward the construction of the Clara Bell Smith Student Athlete Academic Center on the MSU campus.
Cheeney Media produced another full, live switched multicam production of the MSU College of Nursing annual pinning ceremony for graduating nurses.
For years now, when Woldumar holds their annual trail run, they have come to Cheeney Media to design the T-shirts and wooden “medals” worn by and awarded to runners. Whether the yearly logo design is mostly decorative, a little more high concept, or (as in this year) we also design a completely new cartoon character for the kids’ run, the designs are always striking and memorable.
Cheeney Media crew assisted MSU’s Spartan Veteran Project as they worked to collect stories from Michigan State veterans. Even an overcast day is bright and cheery when lit and shot properly.
Our work for Michigan State’s College of Nursing was featured on the front page of the Detroit Free Press in May of 2023. Nursing students who have demonstrated remarkable achievements during their years at the university are lauded and receive special acknowledgement.

After being cancelled last year because of the pandemic, the Grand Awards were back again in November of 2021, and as has happened for years, Cheeney Media was asked to run the show. The program honors MSU alumni who are making a big impact in the world. Cheeney Media ran dual cameras, live switched the show to screens throughout the room, and livestreamed the event to the world.
For the second year in a row, Cheeney Media created the logo for Woldumar’s annual Trail Run. Offered in 2021 as either an in-person or virtual run, the event needed a memorable and eye-catching logo for use on both t-shirts and medallions awarded to the top 3 finishers.
Woldumar’s Trail Run is a popular perennial event that draws participants from locales both near and far. Runners get the dual benefits of exercise and of the beautiful fall foliage that is abundant in the nature center.
Cheeney Media was hired to provide live coverage of Michigan State’s “Thanks for Giving” program, which is a yearly event honoring donors to the university. In a ceremony livestreamed to the world by Cheeney Media, the U.S. Department of Energy designated Michigan State’s Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) as an Office of Science User Facility. The event was multicam and live switched, with numerous video roll-ins.
Attending the ceremony were MSU’s president, facility dignitaries, and numerous members of state and federal congress.
MSU Today described the facility, “At the heart of FRIB is a high-power superconducting linear accelerator that already has been demonstrated to accelerate ion beams to more than half the speed of light to strike a target, creating rare isotopes. With these beam tests demonstrated, FRIB became the highest-energy superconducting heavy-ion linear accelerator.”
During the first summer of the pandemic, Michigan State University decided to create a new interactive map through which new and prospective students might visit various locations on campus virtually. Cheeney Media was hired to shoot videos all over campus to populate this map.
Featuring Michigan State students who were currently studying at the university, the videos offered a glimpse into numerous special campus locations. The students served as tour guides, giving their own take on these locations.
